What is a tuna melt made of?

This sandwich is made of several ingredients, including:

  • Canned tuna: This is the main ingredient in the filling of the tuna melt sandwich. It can be either solid or chunk tuna, drained of its water. Don’t take the one in oil, tuna in oil will make the sandwich higher in fat, we don’t need it.
  • Scallions: These are finely chopped and added to the tuna filling to give it a fresh flavor and some crunch.
  • Mayonnaise: This is used to bind the tuna and scallions together and add a creamy texture and rich flavor. I use light Mayo.
  • Sriracha: This is a popular hot sauce that is added to the tuna filling to give it a spicy kick. The amount added can vary based on personal preference.
  • Cheese: This is usually cheddar or Swiss cheese, sliced or grated and placed on top of the tuna and tomato filling. It is then melted under the broiler or in a toaster oven.
  • Tomatoes: These are sliced and added to the sandwich to give it a juicy and fresh flavor.
  • Bread: This can be any type of bread, but a hearty bread such as sourdough or rye is recommended. It is toasted or grilled before adding the tuna filling.
  • Butter: Butter is spread over the bread before grilling it. This helps to create a crispy and golden-brown crust on the bread and adds a rich buttery flavor.

This tuna melt sandwich is a delicious and satisfying combination of flavors and textures that make for a perfect lunch or quick dinner.

What cheese goes with tuna?

The most common types of cheese used in this sandwich are Cheddar, Swiss, and provolone. These cheeses are known for their ability to melt, rich flavor, and ability to complement the flavor of the tuna. I use Cheddar cheese, as it is a popular choice for a tuna melt as it has a sharp flavor that can cut through the richness of the mayonnaise and tuna, while adding a gooey texture.

Are tuna melts good for you?

This sandwich can be a part of a healthy and balanced diet if prepared with the right ingredients and in moderation. Tuna is a good source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients, which can provide a variety of health benefits.

However, some ingredients commonly used in tuna melts, such as mayonnaise and cheese, can be high in calories, saturated fat, and sodium. To make a healthier version of a tuna melt, you can use a reduced-fat or light mayonnaise, low-fat cheese, and whole-grain bread.

Additionally, adding vegetables such as sliced tomatoes or spinach can boost the fiber and nutrient content of the sandwich. Enjoying a tuna melt as an occasional treat, rather than a regular meal, is a good way to incorporate it into a healthy diet.
